Akwaaba Insurance is an inbound travel insurance scheme of which the Government of Ghana (GoG) has made mandatory for Foreigners with the exception of the Diplomatic Corps entering Ghana, to take as an entry requirement.
The policy covers Medical and Hospitalization Expenses including Epidemic and Pandemic Diseases especially COVID-19 and Quarantine/Isolation Expenses as well as Medical Evacuation following an Accident or Illness among others.
It is similar to the Mapfre Asistencia travel insurance scheme which is an entry requirement to Schengen countries.

The Co-Insurers are a group of indigenous Ghanaian owned Insurance Companies which are SIC PLC, Enterprise Insurance, Glico Life and Star Assurance and the criteria is as follows:

• Ghanaian Insurance companies that have a Health Insurance Scheme
• They are represented nation-wide (the 10 old regions)

• Sector Ministry responsible for implementing the scheme Ministry of Interior (through Ghana Immigration Service)
• Ghana Health Service (GHS) – over 230 Hospitals and Pharmacies
• +300 Private Hospitals nation-wide

• 26 SCHENGEN COUNTRIES Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
• OTHERS Aruba, Cambodia, Lebanon, Seychelles, Curacao, Cuba, Ecuador,Iran, Turkey, Morocco, Thailand, The UAE, Togo, Algeria, Romania, Croatia, Moldova, Georgia, Aruba, Cambodia, Lebanon, Seychelles, Antarctica.

• It covers medical expenses which includes Epidemics and Pandemics especially COVID-19 Quarantine/Isolation Expenses when a foreigner contracts the disease whilst in Ghana.
• Other Medical Evacuation following an accident or illness hospital stay, personal accident liability medical repatriation and emergency expenses. This is highly appreciated by visitors to Ghana who usually do not have enough money on them to cater for these health and other emergencies.
• Akwaaba Insurance enables policy holders to assess quality health care across the country. There are more than 500 health service operators including hospitals and pharmacies enlisted onto the scheme located all over Ghana who will provide health service to policy holders.
• No surprises with huge medical cost whilst in Ghana. There is nothing traumatic than falling sick or being injured in a foreign land, especially when one’s resources are limited.

• Boost to development of insurance and health sectors in Ghana Money obtained from sale of the insurance USD annually could be generated annually through the sale of Akwaaba Insurance will impact positively on the development insurance and health sectors in Ghana.
• Relieves GoG expenditure on health care Akwaaba Travel Insurance will relieve government of the cost of caring for foreigners who pandemic and endemics such as the on-going devastating COVID 19. The scheme covers the associated costs.
• Boost to tourism The travel insurance scheme will also promote Ghana’s tourism industry since tourists are assured of instant quality health care from a team of over 500 participating top-notch hospitals and other medical service providers, nationwide. This makes Ghana a safer destination for tourists.
• Create employment Akwaaba Travel Insurance will create over 1,300 additional full-time jobs (health, insurance, hospitality, ICT sectors etc.) and 5,000 part time jobs.
• Increase in IGF Akwaaba Travel Insurance will generate additional Internally generated funds (IGF) for the partners such as Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and Ghana Health Service (GHS).
